{"id":468,"date":"2010-05-30T20:34:11","date_gmt":"2010-05-30T18:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.karadere.com\/blog\/?p=468"},"modified":"2010-05-30T20:34:11","modified_gmt":"2010-05-30T18:34:11","slug":"vmware-image-covert-to-virtualbox-image","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karadere.com\/blog\/vmware-image-covert-to-virtualbox-image.html","title":{"rendered":"vmware image covert  to virtualbox image"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve found more and more people are switching to Virtualbox these  days and I keep running into the same question. \u00a0\u201dHow can I convert my  VMware images to Virtualbox images?\u201d \u00a0Well, breath easy because it is  possible and not very difficult!<\/p>\n<p>There are two methods that I am aware of that will allow you to use  your VMware images on Virtualbox. \u00a0The first method I\u2019ll outline uses  the graphical Virtualbox interface and the second uses the command line.   Each method should be equally as stable, it simple depends on your  preference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Start Virtualbox<br \/>\nInside the Virtualbox Menu click: File &gt; Virtual Media Manager<br \/>\nClick on the \u201cAdd\u201d button.<br \/>\nLocate and select the VMware .vmdk file you\u2019d like to convert.<br \/>\nClick Open.<br \/>\nVerify your disk image has been added to the list of images and that the  virtual and actual sizes appear accurate.<br \/>\nClick OK<br \/>\nCreate a new virtual machine profile, selecting your imported image for  the storage.<br \/>\nBoot your new virtual machine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Method 2<\/strong><br \/>\nTo use the second method we\u2019ll need an addition command-line tool called  qemu.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><code>sudo aptitude install qemu<\/code><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You\u2019ll new be able to convert a .vmdk (VMware image) to a .bin  format, which can then be converted to a Virtualbox native .vdi format.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><code>qemu-img convert \/path\/to\/original.vmdk  converted.bin<\/code><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You\u2019ll then need to use the VBoxManage utility that comes with  Virtualbox to convert the .bin to a native .vdi format:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><code>VBoxManage convertdd converted.bin converted.vdi<\/code><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can now create your new Virtualbox machine profile, using this  new .vdi file as your disk image.<\/p>\n<p>Two methods for converting VMware images to Virtualbox images. \u00a0Are  there any other methods that you can suggest, or have you had better  experience with one or the other? \u00a0Let us know!<\/p>\n<p>If this article has  been helpful, please consider linking to it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve found more and more people are switching to Virtualbox these days and I keep running into the same question. \u00a0\u201dHow can I convert my VMware images to Virtualbox images?\u201d \u00a0Well, breath easy because it is possible and not very difficult!
